Explore the Shore at Point Defiance

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium invites you to find out at Owen Beach in Tacoma’s beautiful Point Defiance Become a marine life citizen scientist for a day at Owen Beach!  The FREE Explore the Shore adventure is hosted by the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.  Bring the family and explore an join nature walks along a  low tide beach  where we will identify tide pool animals and record their presence and location in order to add the information to the scientific Nature Mapping database. Groups will also receive a field guide to common animals found along the shore. Experience the wonder of holding a tiny ocean crab in the palm of your hand!
This is a fun and exciting opportunity for ages 5-adult to learn about the biological diversity of local beaches and how to protect them. Come prepared with sunscreen, a hat, and weather-appropriate clothing. Sturdy, closed-toed shoes are recommended for walking on a rocky beach with lots of barnacles.
No RSVP needed. Each event will begin with a short introduction to tide pool animals. Come prepared with sunscreen and weather-appropriate clothing. Sturdy shoes are recommended for walking on a gravel beach. Explore the Shore is FREE.
